A moment of care is a moment to share

The column "Find Your Buried Treasure" appears weekly in the Chanhassen (MN) Villager. This column was published on November 25, 2010. It started with a last-minute cancellation, and ended with another one. But what happened in between was a gift, and Thanksgiving seems like the perfect time to acknowledge it. I had two meetings scheduled half an hour apart on a recent morning. I scheduled them both for a nearby café, and brought a book with me to read during the time in between. My first client had an emergency situation come up, and called to see if we could reschedule. After I got off the phone with her, I debated going home for a while, since I now had an hour and a half, rather than half an hour, till my next meeting. I decided not to sacrifice the time it would take to drive there and back. Instead I would just enjoy the extra reading time...

Holiday dreams can brighten the season

The column "Find Your Buried Treasure" appears weekly in the Chanhassen (MN) Villager. This column was published on November 18, 2010. The snowstorm we had last weekend brought us face-to-face with winter weather. It also got me thinking about the upcoming holiday season, and the difficulties and stresses people often have during what should be a beautiful, spiritual and peaceful time of year. This holiday season I’m planning to incorporate what I’ve learned from Dream Coaching – both in being coached and in coaching others – that I know will help me to eliminate much of the seasonal stress and to enjoy the Christmas of my dreams. I’m sharing a few of the practices in case you’d like to try them as well...

Simple advice makes a powerful impact

The column "Find Your Buried Treasure" appears weekly in the Chanhassen (MN) Villager. This column was published on October 21, 2010. Every so often I come across some deceptively-simple advice. It is condensed to just a few simple words, but could replace volumes that have been written on the subject. One example is the five-word directive to “Eat less, exercise more, repeat,” which could replace thousands of books about how to lose weight. Last week I heard another five-word piece of advice that could benefit many people, myself included. It came from a client who was working through an “assignment” I had given him that was designed to process, complete, and eliminate the type of excess baggage, clutter, and unfinished business that many of us carry around with us. It can be physical, mental, or emotional, and consists of things that haunt us or nag at us, and that take up space in our homes and our heads. And because it can weigh us down or keep us anchored to the past, it also keeps us from moving forward on our dreams and goals. At the very least, it slows us down more than we realize...

Geometric shapes get to the heart of the matter

The column “Find Your Buried Treasure” appears weekly in the Chanhassen (MN) Villager. This column was published on September 2, 2010. At two unrelated conferences I attended recently, I was in breakout sessions in which we were asked to choose which of several geometric shapes we were drawn to. Then we were given a description of the characteristics of people in each group. My initial choice was a triangle, although I couldn’t really tell you why. But when the characteristics were described, it was clear that I was in the wrong group. I’m a circle, no doubt about it...

Quotes and Sayings I Love

“She wasn’t where she had been. She wasn’t where she was going. But she was on her way.” I haven’t been able to trace the origin of that quote, but it’s on a refrigerator magnet I keep on the bulletin board in my office (since I don’t have a refrigerator in my office). I get energized every time I read it. It reminds me—especially when I get frustrated or exhausted, or when things I’m trying to do don’t go as planned and I start to feel as though they never will—that I have come a long way, and I’ve accomplished a great deal. Even if the big prize or the big picture is still way beyond the horizon...

Welcome!

Welcome to the launch of my new blog, “Find Your Buried Treasure.” Consider this a voyage and a treasure hunt we’re embarking on together. I’ve discovered that the more I help other people find their buried treasure, the more I find of my own. I hope that will be true for you as well. The buried treasure I’m talking about is made up of the gifts, talents, skills, and strengths we don’t even realize we have – because they come so naturally to us and feel so common and ordinary that we don’t even consider them special. We may neglect or ignore them, or simply be unaware of their worth and value. But there’s buried treasure in everyone, and I want to help you find it...
