Okay, it’s my turn.

I felt like I was coming down with a cold yesterday. It was worse this morning, with a few extra symptoms that were annoying, but not alarming. Still, I remember a friend of mine saying not long ago that he had had what he thought was a cold, but turned out to be COVID. So I did a home COVID test, and – sure enough – it was positive.

The first thing I did was call to cancel the dental appointment I had scheduled for this morning, and a session to work with some interns at the Writers Museum this afternoon. Then I called my doctor’s office and the people I had spent time with in the last week or so, to alert them.

Since I’m double-vaxxed and triple-boosted (and doesn’t that sound like it came from a laundry detergent commercial, or a country-western song?), I’m hopeful – and confident – that my symptoms won’t be any worse than they are now. Still, I’m not going to get complacent or careless, especially since my doctor told me what to do if I developed any serious symptoms, like not being able to breathe. And because I read just this morning that the U.S. is approaching the grim milestone of one million COVID deaths, and hundreds of people are still dying of it every day. That’s enough to put things in perspective. On the other hand, as my son pointed out, it’s better to have gotten COVID in May of 2022 than in May of 2020.

I plan to keep my distance from my husband, as much as I’m able, to avoid infecting him. We’ll do some extra laundry and cleaning and disinfecting around the house. Other than that, I’m looking forward to a quiet weekend at home, catching up on some reading, writing, and sleeping. And I’ll do some research on the current guidelines for COVID quarantine, isolation, and precautions.

I’ll also use my blog this week as a reminder to everyone that COVID is still with us, and even if we aren’t required to stay home or wear masks everywhere we go, it’s still a good idea to take whatever precautions we can, for our own protection and that of those we care about and spend time with.

Have a safe – and healthy – weekend!
