A friend posted something on Facebook recently that really warmed my heart. She had been in a coffee shop with several friends, discussing a difficult decision she had to make, and apparently got a bit teary-eyed while talking about it. A little later, a young woman stopped by their table on her way out, with a piece of coffeecake for my friend, telling her she hoped it would make her day a little better.
I’m sure it did. And I’m going to try to keep an eye out for opportunities to do the same thing. It doesn’t take much time or effort, and it doesn’t even have to include coffeecake. It could be as simple as a smile, a word of appreciation or understanding, or any small act of kindness. As my friend said in her post, kindness is another form of love.
Thanksgiving weekend seems like the perfect time to say how grateful I am that there are people like this in the world – people who notice when others seem to be a little down, and offer a small but thoughtful gesture in the hopes of cheering them up a bit.
I’m also grateful for the reminder that I can – and should – be one of those people as well.
